Electric Skateboards in Finland
2026 Regulations
Finland has a clear legal framework for motorized personal mobility devices. Here are the rules you need to know to legally ride your e-skate.
🧭 Official Status
In Finland, electric skateboards are officially recognized, and their classification depends on their speed and motor power.
The country distinguishes three main categories.
📋 Categories
Walking aid → ≤ 15 km/h and ≤ 1 kW
→ considered a pedestrian (sidewalks allowed).Light electric vehicle → 16-25 km/h and ≤ 1 kW
→ treated like a bicycle, allowed on bike paths and roads.Moped → beyond 25 km/h or 1 kW
→ registration, insurance, and license required.
👉 Most e-skates on the market are light vehicles: limited to 25 km/h, they remain completely legal.
📋 📜 New for 2025
Minimum age: 15 years.
Max blood alcohol level: 0.5 ‰ (same limit as for drivers).
Helmet recommended (often required on tracks).
License mandatory for rental services.
🚧 Where to Ride
Bike paths: allowed for compliant models.
Roads: allowed if no bike path is available.
Sidewalks: only for devices ≤ 15 km/h.
L'essentiel
Finland offers a clear and favorable framework for riders:
e-skates ≤ 25 km/h and ≤ 1 kW are treated like bicycles, so they are free to circulate on most roads.
Beyond that, they fall into the moped category, with the associated obligations.
This is a country that prioritizes responsibility and safety, without hindering electric mobility.
