Electric Skateboarding in the Czech Republic
2026 Regulations
In the Czech Republic, electric skateboard regulations remain unclear. Here's what we know and our advice for riding safely.
📋 ⚖️ Unclear Legality
In the Czech Republic, electric skateboards are not yet mentioned in the law.
However, some similar devices – such as self-balancing Segways – are recognised as "personal transporters", which leaves room for interpretation for e-skates.
🧭 Official Status
E-skates are not included in the Highway Code.
"Personal transporters" are treated as pedestrians, permitted to:
use cycle paths,
use pavements at walking speed,
but not the roadway, except for local exceptions.
The application of these rules to e-skates depends on local authorities: tolerated in some areas, prohibited in others.
📋 Regulations in Preparation
The government is considering imposing mandatory third-party liability insurance for vehicles:
exceeding 25 km/h,
or weighing more than 25 kg.
👉 If this measure is adopted, it could apply to powerful e-skates in the future.
📋 📌 Rider Tips
Stay at a moderate speed (max 25 km/h).
Prioritise riding on cycle paths if possible.
Pavements: allowed at a slow pace and without disturbing pedestrians.
Helmet recommended, especially in urban areas.
Third-party liability insurance advised as a precaution.
🏁 In Summary
In the Czech Republic, e-skates operate in a legal grey area:
tolerated in some cases, but without official recognition.
A reform is underway and could introduce obligations (insurance, speed, weight).
In the meantime, the key is: caution, respect, and discretion on public roads.
