Electric Skateboards in the Netherlands
2026 Regulations
The Netherlands has a clear legal framework for motorized personal mobility devices (EDPMs). Here are the rules you need to know to ride your e-skate legally.
🧭 Official Status
Since June 1, 2019, electric skateboards have been recognized as motorized personal mobility devices (EDM).
They are part of the micro-mobility family, which includes electric scooters, unicycles, hoverboards, etc.
⚙️ Legal Requirements
Top speed: 25 km/h.
No license or registration is required as long as the speed remains limited to 25 km/h.
Insurance is not mandatory, but family liability insurance is highly recommended.
Helmets and protective gear are advised, especially in urban areas.
Lights and reflective clothing are mandatory at night.
⚠️ Warning: E-skates exceeding 4 kW-which includes most high-performance models-cannot be approved for road use.
👉 Result: for use only on private land or in closed-off areas.
L'essentiel
The Netherlands is paving the way for electric mobility, but not yet fully for powerful electric skateboards. They are tolerated on private land, but not on the road.
