Electric Skateboards in Belgium
Regulations 2026

Since 2019, Belgium has provided a clear and favorable framework for motorized personal mobility devices. Here are the rules you need to know to ride your e-skate legally.

🟢 Legal framework established
🏎️ Top speed: 25 km/h
🛡️ Insurance: Recommended (family liability insurance)
⛑️ Helmet: Recommended
👤 Minimum age: Not specified
💡 Lighting: Mandatory
💸 Max fine: Variable

🧭 Official Status

Since June 2019, Belgium has recognized electric skateboards as motorized personal mobility devices (EDPMs). These are motor vehicles (with 2 or more wheels) with a design speed not exceeding 25 km/h.

The Belgian framework distinguishes two categories based on your speed: below 6 km/h, you are considered a pedestrian; above, you are considered a cyclist.

⚙️ Legal Requirements

  • Speed limited to a maximum of 25 km/h by design.
  • No license or registration required.
  • Family liability insurance is highly recommended (not mandatory if limited to 25 km/h).
  • Front and rear lights are mandatory, as is reflective clothing.
  • Helmets and protective gear are not mandatory but strongly recommended.

⚠️ Warning: if your skateboard exceeds 25 km/h or 4 kW, it falls into a higher category, requiring homologation, a license plate, insurance, and a helmet.

🚧 Where to Ride

  • Below 6 km/h: you are considered a pedestrian, sidewalks are permitted.
  • Above 6 km/h: you become a “cyclist”, you must use cycle paths or ride on the right side of the road.
  • RAVeL routes: open to e-skates limited to 25 km/h, a network of greenways perfect for riding.
