Electric Skateboarding in Belgium
Regulations 2026

Belgium has had a clear and favourable framework for motorised personal mobility devices since 2019. Here are the rules you need to know to ride your e-skate legally.

🟢 Legal framework established
🏎️ Top speed: 25 km/h
🛡️ Insurance: Recommended (family liability)
⛑️ Helmet: Recommended
👤 Minimum age: Not specified
💡 Lighting: Mandatory
💸 Max fine: Variable

🧭 Official Status

Since June 2019, Belgium has recognised electric skateboards as motorised personal mobility devices. These are motor vehicles (2 wheels or more) whose design speed does not exceed 25 km/h.

The Belgian framework distinguishes two sets of rules based on your riding speed: below 6 km/h, you are considered a pedestrian; above, you are considered a cyclist.

⚙️ Legal Conditions

  • Speed limited to a maximum of 25 km/h by design.
  • No licence or registration required.
  • Family liability insurance highly recommended (not mandatory if limited to 25 km/h).
  • Front and rear lighting mandatory, as well as reflective clothing.
  • Helmet and protective gear not compulsory but highly recommended.

⚠️ Warning: if your skateboard exceeds 25 km/h or 4 kW, it falls into a higher category. Type approval, licence plate, insurance, and helmet then become mandatory.

🚧 Where to Ride

  • Less than 6 km/h: you are considered a pedestrian. Pavements allowed.
  • Above 6 km/h: you become a "cyclist". You must use cycle paths or ride on the right side of the road.
  • RAVeL routes: open to e-skates limited to 25 km/h. A network of greenways ideal for riding.
