Electric Skateboards in France
Regulations 2026

France is one of the most advanced European countries regarding EDPM regulations. Here's everything you need to know to ride legally.

🟢 Legal framework established
🏎️ Top speed: 25 km/h
🛡️ Insurance: Mandatory (Third-Party Liability)
⛑️ Helmet: Recommended
👤 Minimum age: 14 years old
💡 Lighting: Mandatory
💸 Max fine: €1.500

🧭 Official Status

Since the decree of 23 October 2019, France has recognised electric skateboards as EDPMs (Engins de Déplacement Personnel Motorisés). They are therefore officially permitted on public roads, just like electric scooters, unicycles, and gyropods.

France is one of the first European countries to have established a complete and clear legal framework for this type of vehicle. The rules are precise, penalties defined, and traffic zones clearly identified.

⚙️ Legal Conditions

  • Speed limited to 25 km/h maximum (removing the speed limiter is punishable by a fine).
  • Front and rear lights are mandatory, as well as side and rear reflectors.
  • An audible warning device (like a bell or horn).
  • Third-party liability insurance is mandatory – without it, you are riding illegally.
  • Minimum age: 14 years old.
  • Full compliance with the Highway Code.
  • Helmet highly recommended (not yet mandatory for adults, but mandatory for children under 12 on bicycles – the recommendation applies by extension).
  • Reflective vest mandatory outside built-up areas and at night.

🚧 Where to Ride

  • In town: on cycle paths first. In the absence of a path, on the road limited to 50 km/h max.
  • Outside built-up areas: only on cycle paths or greenways.
  • Pavements: strictly prohibited, unless otherwise decided by the municipality (in this case, you must ride at walking pace, at 6 km/h max).
  • Parking: prohibited on pavements in certain cities (Paris, in particular, imposes dedicated zones).

Possible fines: up to 1.€500 for riding on the pavement, derestriction, or lack of lighting. €135 for non-compliance with traffic rules.
