Legally Riding an Electric Skateboard in France
The Regulation of Motorised Personal Transport Devices (MPTD)
Since the implementation of Decree No. 2019-1082 concerning Motorised Personal Transport Devices (MPTD), the use of electric skateboards on public roads in France is strictly regulated.
At Evo-Spirit, all our models comply with this regulation, allowing you to ride legally on the road while retaining the ride feel and performance of our sport versions.
Here's everything you need to know to ride legally.
Models Compliant with MPTD Regulations
Our models that comply with the MPTD decree retain the performance of the sport versions (power, braking, range, comfort…) with one exception: the speed is limited to 25 km/h, in accordance with the law.
To comply with the MPTD decree, our models come with all the necessary equipment:
Front and rear lights - for visibility
Sound warning device - finger bell provided
Reflectors - reflective devices
This setup allows you to ride legally in cities and on cycle paths.

Where Can You Legally Ride an Electric Skateboard in Compliance with French Legislation?
The regulation distinguishes two contexts: urban areas and outside urban areas.
In urban areas:
✅ On cycle paths or lanes
✅ On roads limited to 50 km/h (if there are no cycle paths)
❌ Prohibited on pavements, unless local permission is granted
Outside urban areas:
❌ Prohibited on regular roads
✅ Allowed only on greenways and cycle paths
What is Prohibited by Law
When using an MPTD, certain behaviours are strictly prohibited:
Riding on pavements
Carrying a passenger - single use only
Riding with headphones or earphones
Riding under the influence of alcohol or drugs
Obligations for All Users
Every user must also:
Have a sound warning device
Use front and rear lights
Be at least 14 years old
Take out specific third-party liability insurance for MPTD
Obey the highway code - priorities, lights, signs...
If not, you may face fines of up to €1500.
Wearing a helmet is strongly recommended according to legal guidelines.
